I changed clothes and did my hair. I looked at the clock. It was 6:15. I went downstairs. My parents were in the kitchen finishing up dinner. I sat down on the sofa and flipped the channels on the tv. A few moments later, I heard a knock on the door. I jumped up.
Shante: I'll get it!!!
I ran to the door and opened it. There he stood.
Lemarvin: Hey.
Shante: Hello. Come in.
He walked in and I closed the door.
Lemarvin: As always you look pretty.
Shante: Thank you. You look nice.
Lemarvin: Thanks.
He did look nice. His hair was braied to the back. He had on khaki's and a white button up shirt. Of course, he smelled wonderful.
Dad: Well, hello, finally.
He held out his hand. They shook.
Lemarvin: Good evening, sir. I'm Lemarvin.
Dad: Nice to meet you.
Mom: Welcome. We're Shante's parents.
Lemarvin: Of course.
Dad: Go ahead and wash up. Dinner is ready now.
Shante: I'll show you to the bathroom.
Lemarvin followed me down the hall to the bathroom. I flipped on the light swithch.
Lemarvin: Thanks.
Shante: You're welcome.
He smiled at me as I left the bathroom. My mother made me help her take dishes in the dining room. I heard my father and Lemarvin talking in the kitchen.
Shante: Oh Lord
Mom: He seems to be a polite young man despite his appearance.
Shante: What is that supposed to mean?
Mom: I'm saying, you can tell he is from the streets but his demeanor is pleasant.
Shante: Just because a person wasn't raised in a big house with both parents doesn't mean they weren't taught how to be respectful.
Mom: I know that, honey.
Shante: Mom, please don't judge him until you get to know him. He's really not a bad guy at all.
She was getting on my nerves so I left the dining room and went into the kitchen where Lemarvin and my dad were.
Shante: Time to eat.
Dad: Okay, here we come.
They followed me into the dining room. To my surprise, Lemarvin pulled out my chair for me to sit down and he sat next to me. He gave me a reassuring smile. I guess he could tell I was annoyed.
We passed the dishes around and put food on our plates.
Mom: Lemarvin, do you like peas and carrots?
Shante: No, he doesn't, Mom.
My mom gave me a funny look.
Lemarvin: I'll try some.
He looked at me as if to say, be cool.
Shante: You don't have to eat that. You don't like it.
Lemarvin: It's alright. I'll try it. Maybe I'll like her way.
I sighed. He didn't have to try so hard to please my parents. It was making me angrier by the minute. The whole situation was pissing me off completely.
I didn't talk much during dinner. I mainly played with my food. My parents kept throwing questions at Lemarvin. He was good though. He came right back at them.
Dad: So, do you have plans for college?
Lemarvin: I did.
Dad: Why not now.
Lemarvin: After high school, I had to take care of my uncle when he fell ill.
Dad: Oh, I see. What about your parents?
Lemarvin: They're not around.
Mom: Why not? Where are they?
That made me mad.
Shante: Mom! That isn't any of your business! He don't want to talk about that.
Mom: Shante!
Shante: Mom!
Dad: Enough!
I looked down at my plate. It was dead silent.
My Dad changed the subject.
Dad: Do you have a job?
Lemarvin: Not right now.
Dad: So, what do you do to get by?
Lemarvin: I do what I need to do.
It fell quiet again. I couldn't stand it. I stood up.
Shante: This is some complete bullshit!!!!!!!
Mom: Shante Monique! You better watch your mouth, young lady!
Shante: I most certainly will not! I can't continue to sit here while the two of you give him the third degree like he is some convict or something just because he isn't in college or have a multi-million dollar company and millions of dollars in the bank like you or drive a Jaguar and flies across seas like every other week!!! He is a good person and I don't care what either of you think or want! I love him and I am going to be with him regardless and I'll help him do whatever he needs to do to get his self togethor! I am tired of being quiet and just letting things go like everything is alright. Well, it isn't!!! The both of you are too stuck on yourselves and preoccupied with your lives to know what is going on and then have the audacity to judge other people! Did you forget that the both of you were poor and on welfare when you got married? What did Dad do when money was tight and that minimum wage job wasn't cutting it? Yeah, I know all about it!!! Forgot about that shit, huh? Funny what money does to people. Makes them forget where they came from!!!!
With that, I pushed back my chair and stormed out of the dining room. You should have seen the looks on their faces. _________________ Yep, I'm still doing me. How U doin? LOL

I went outside and sat on the porch. A few moments later, Lemarvin came out and sat beside me.
Lemarvin: Damn, baby. You cool?
Shaking my head.
Shante: NO!!!!
Lemarvin: I have never seen you so angry.
Shante: Well, I don't like how they are asking you all sorts of irrelevant questions.
Lemarvin: Oh, they weren't that bad.
Shante: Yes they were! They were being judgmental towards you and they don't even know you!
Lemarvin: I think all parents are critical at some degree as to who their children date.
Shante: I can understand that. But to be underminding I do not. Next they'll be saying how you aren't right for me and I can do better. I'm not trying to hear a word they have to say!
Lemarvin: It really doesn't bother me. I've dealt with worse. I've had parents call me a complete loser to my face and forbad me to see their daughter ever again.
Shante: Believe me, that was coming next.
Lemarvin: Why don't you just chill. I think it will be cool. You'll be going away to school soon.
Shante: And they are paying for it! They'll use this against me somehow.
Lemarvin: I don't know about that.
Shante: You'll see. You don't know my parents.
Lemarvin: You're right.
He started rubbing my back with his left hand.
Lemarvin: You should apologize to them.
I turned and looked at him.
Shante: What?
He looked around. Then back at me.
Lemarvin: Yeah? That's what I said.
Shante: For what?
Lemarvin: You just cursed at your parents. Don't you think that was a bit disrespectful to be doing?
Shante: Oh hell!
Lemarvin: So, you're cursing now?
Shante: They are the ones wrong!
Lemarvin: Whether they are or not, you are still their daughter and you are living under their roof. You still can't just go off on them like that.
Shante: Who's side are you on?
Lemarvin: I'm on your side. But I do know the difference between right and wrong. You just could have handled it differently. That's all I'm saying.
Shante: They pissed me off!
Lemarvin: I understand that, baby. But imagine this. Your child talked to you the way you just talked to your parents. How would you feel?
Shante: I wouldn't tolerate that at all!
Lemarvin: Exactly. Feel me?
I sighed.
Shante: Yeah, yeah. I suppose.
Lemarvin: So, come on.
He stood up and reached for my hand. I grabbed it as he pulled me up to my feet. We walked back inside. My parents were still sittiing at the table.
Shante: Mom...... Dad.
They looked up.
Dad: Yes?
Shante: Please accept my apology. I just snapped out.
Mom: We understand you are frustrated, dear. But that is not how you deal with it. We just want what is best for you.
Shante: Yeah, I know.
Dad: Lemarvin?
Lemarvin: Yes, sir?
Dad: May I talk to you for a moment?
Lemarvin: Of course, sir.
Dad got up from the table and they walked down into the basement. _________________ Yep, I'm still doing me. How U doin? LOL
