I was all smiles the next day. Deja came up to me grinning at my locker.

Deja: So?
Shante: What?
Deja: How was it?
Shante: Fine.
Deja: That's it?
Shante: Yep.
Deja: Winch, you better lay it all out!
Shante: We had a good time.
Deja: Did you at least kiss the boy?
Shante: Hmmmm
Deja: Just say it already!
Shante: Yep.
Deja: Oh my God! I bet he is a good kisser. I can tell.
Shante: He's not bad.
Deja: Oh, please. You are glowing.
Shante: Whatever! You are nuts.
Deja: Uh huh. I see it all over your face.

I just shrugged and went to class. Of course, Carlos ignored me. I didn't care anymore. My mind was on something else. I could hardly wait to get out of school and go over to Mrs. West's. I almost leaped off the bus and looked around. I spotted him across the street, leaning up against the building.

Lemarvin: Hey!
He ran across the street to where I was.
Shante: What's up?
Lemarvin: You
Shante: Oh
Lemarvin: Hey, what are you doing Friday night?
Shante: Nothing that I know of. Why?
Lemarvin: Since we did not go to the movies, I want to take you. There is a new movie playing that I really want to see. You down?
Shante: Are you asking me out on a date?
Lemarvin: Yeah, I guess I am. So do you want to go?
Shante: Sure.
Lemarvin: Cool......I'll pick you up at 8:30. The movies starts at 9.
Shante: That's fine.
He started gazing at me again. I felt myself blushing again.
Lemarvin: Man...you are so fine.
Shante: Cut that out.
Lemarvin: No, really. Make me wanna.....
Shante: What? Don't start to say something then stop.
Lemarvin: Nothing at all.
Shante: I hate that!
Lemarvin: So what.
He laughed. I rolled my eyes at him.
Shante: I have to go.
I started to turn around but he grabbed my arm.
Lemarvin: Hold up, babygirl.
He turned me around and kissed me. I felt chills all over my body.
Shante: Okay.....
Lemarvin: Do you want me to give you a ride home when you leave here?
Shante: If you want.
Lemarvin: I'd prefer it. Too dangersous around here.
Shante: Alright.
Lemarvin: Call me when you are about to go and I'll be out front waiting.
He pulled out a pen, grabbed my hand and wrote his number on my palm.

I actually was anxious to leave Mrs. West's. I hope she did not notice. I called LeMarvin about ten minutes before I was going to leave.

LeMarvin: What it do?
Shante: It's me.
LeMarvin: Hey, babygirl. Are you ready?
Shante: Yes.
LeMarvin: Okay...I am right around the corner. By the time you make it to the bus stop, I should be pulling up.
Shante: Alright.

We hung up. I hugged Mrs. West and hurried downstairs. And just as I reached the bus stop, he was pulling up. He pushed open the door for me and I hopped in.

LeMarvin: How is she doing?
Shante: Who?
LeMarvin: The lady you help.
Shante: Oh....sorry. She is fine.
LeMarvin: That's really nice of you to do that.
Shante: Well, you know. I do what I can.
LeMarvin: I admire that a lot.
Shante: Thanks.
LeMarvin: You're welcome.
We fell quiet for a moment.
Shante: I want to ask you something.
LeMarvin: Go for it.
Shante: What do you do all day? I mean, do you work somewhere?
He paused before he spoke.
LeMarvin: You can call it that.
Shante: What is it?
LeMarvin: I don't think you really want to know.
Shante: Yes, I do or I would not have asked.
LeMarvin: People don't like to hear the truth.
Shante: I do.
LeMarvin: You may not.
Shante: What are you? A giggolo?
He laughed.
LeMarvin: No, girl. That's a good one, though.
Shante: Then what? You are so secretive.
LeMarvin: Not really. Just being careful.
Shante: Why do you need to be careful?
LeMarvin: I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.
Shante: How would you do that?
LeMarvin: By exposing something a person may not be prepared for.
Shante: I think I can handle whatever it is.
LeMarvin: Well, if you really want to know....I'll tell you.
Shante: Okay.
He paused.
LeMarvin: I sell.
Shante: Sell what?
LeMarvin: What do you think?
Shante: I don't know. Clothes?
He laughed.
LeMarvin: No, babygirl.
Then he looked at me. I figured it out then.
Shante: Ohhhhh....
There was an awkward silence.
LeMarvin: Well?
Shante: You don't have it with you now do you?
LeMarvin: No, of course not. I would never have that around you.
Shante: So, why do you do that?
LeMarvin: Can't get a job.
Shante: What do you mean, you can't? There are plenty of jobs.
LeMarvin: They won't hire me. I've tried everywhere. This is all I have known.
Shante: That's not all there is. You can do something.
LeMarvin: Like what?
Shante: Something other than that.

I let what he told me penetrate. I really didn't know what to say about it. But I did know that I didn't want him doing that. I made up my mind to do something about it.

I caught my father home one evening. He was in the den reading the newspaper. I approached him.

Shante: Dad?
He looked up from the paper.
Dad: Yes, dear?
Shante: Can I talk to you about something?
Dad: Sure.
He put the paper down and make a spot for me on the sofa. I sat down.
Shante: Well...the thing is...I have this friend that really needs a job and I was wondering did you have anything available that you needed help with.

He thought for a moment.

Dad: Hmmmm. I very well may have. I'd have to check on a few things and get back to you.
Shante: Would you? I'd appreciate that a lot.
Dad: No problem. So..this friend of yours....is it a male or female?
Shante: Why? Does that matter?
Dad: No, no. I was just wondering.
Shante: Male. He really needs a job. He's having a hard time finding one.
Dad: I'll see what I can come up with.
Shante: Okay. Thanks.

I hugged him and ran upstairs to my room. I had to get ready for my date with LeMarvin. I put on a cute outfit and curled my hair. Just as I was finishing, my phone rang.

Shante: Hello?
LeMarvin: I'm outside. Are you ready?
Shante: Here I come.

I ran back downstairs and out the door. LeMarvin was standing in front of the passenger side door, he moved over and opened it for me. He looked at me and smiled.

LeMarvin: Man, you always look good.
Shante: So do you.

This time he was dressed in gray and black. His hair was unbraied and pulled into a long pony tail. He looked really cute.

We talked a little bit on the way to the theater. He was a gentleman the entire time. More and more I was falling for this guy. When he would look at me, I would get the weirdest but most pleasant feeling in the pit of my stomach. I never felt this way about a guy before. I actually looked forward to each day that I might see his face.

I hardly could watch the movie because my mind was wondering. I just wanted to be alone with him so bad. When the movie was over, I was so anxious to get out of there. He laughed at me.

Shante: Now what?
LeMarvin: Do you have an appointment?
Shante: No....I just don't like a crowd.

We walked back to his car and got in. He drove me back to my house and parked in front. He had a serious look on his face.

LeMarvin: We need to talk.
Shante: About what?
LeMarvin: Us....and where this is going.
Shante: Okay.
LeMarvin: I really like you. A lot. But....
Shante: Oh, no. Not the old 'but it's me, not you' lecture.
LeMarvin: No, no, babygirl. Let me finish.
Shante: Go ahead.
LeMarvin: I'm not the type of guy for you.
Shante: What? What makes you say that?
LeMarvin: I told you what I do.
Shante: So? You told me and I am still here.
LeMarvin: You deserve someone better. Not a drug dealer.
Shante: So now you know what is best for me?
LeMarvin: I am saying you are too good for someone like me.
Shante: You don't know that.
LeMarvin: I know that you are a smart girl with a bright future ahead of you and I'd just pull you back.
Shante: No you wouldn't!
LeMarvin: I just think.....we should cool it a bit. Before feelings get too strong and someone gets hurt.
Shante: Well, if that is what you want then fine!
I opnened the door and got out and ran up the pathway to my house. I went inside and ran up to my room and slammed the door shut.

I didn't see LeMarvin for the next few days. He didn't call and I didn't see him as I was coming and leaving from Mrs. West's. I didn't understand what was going on with him but I tried not to think about it and focus on getting myself prepared for graduation, which was only two weeks away now. I ran into JoJo in the hall one day at school.

JoJo: Hey, Shante. What's up with you and my boy?
Shante: I don't know. Ask him.
JoJo: I did and he said nothing.
Shante: Then I guess it's nothing then.
JoJo: I thought the two of you hit it off?
Shante: Well, so did I.
JoJo: I need to have a serious talk with him.
Shante: No, it's cool. Don't waste your time.

I hurried off to class before he could say anything else. I was so confused. I finally like a guy and he tells me I am too good for him? I was starting to get pissed off the more I thought about the situation. I decided to call him when I got home from Mrs. West's that evening.

LeMarvin: What's up?
Shante: You could call and make sure I am okay.
LeMarvin: Babygirl....I'm sorry. JoJo said he talked to you.
Shante: Somewhat.
LeMarvin: Well...how are you?
Shante: How do you think I am?
LeMarvin: I really don't know. Tell me.
Shante: I am comfused.
LeMarvin: Not my intention at all.
Shante: What was your intentions exactly.
LeMarvin: To get to know you as a friend. But then I started catching feelings.
Shante: What was so wrong with that?
LeMarvin: We are so different. From two completely different sides of the tracks.
Shante: And that's a bad thing?
LeMarvin: No, but what do we have in common?
Shante: I don't know. We would have figured that out.
LeMarvin: Now, babygirl. Let me ask you something.
Shante: Nothing stopping you.
LeMarvin: What is it about me that you like? I'm not like those boys at school.
Shante: Well...you are so different. Maybe it is because you are a little older and you may have experienced some things. Maybe it's because you some what rugged but a gentleman at the same time. Maybe I find that appealing about you.
LeMarvin: You are going away to college, right?
Shante: Yes.
LeMarvin: So, if we was a couple, where would that put our relationship?
Shante: You could have came with me.
LeMarvin: Yeah, right. Stop playing.
Shante: I am serious! We'd work it out.
LeMarvin: I don't even have a job.
Shante: You'd find one. As a matter of fact, my father can help you with that. I asked him and he said he may have something for you.
LeMarvin: Why did you do that?
Shante: Trying to help. You said no one would hire you and my dad has a few businesses that he operates.
LeMarvin: Do you know what that does to a man's ego?
Shante: The hell with an ego! You told me something really important and I was willing to stand by you regardless and you pushed me away just as I was beginning to fall for you!
Then I paused. I didn't mean to tell him that I was falling for him.
LeMarvin: You what?
Shante: Nothing.
LeMarvin: I heard what you said.
Shante: So?
LeMarvin: You know what? You have came out of that shell.
Shante: You helped me do that.
LeMarvin: You want to know something?
Shante: Sure, why not?
LeMarvin: I've already falling in love with you. That's why I had to push you way. I got scared and didn't want to hurt you with this mess I be dealing with. You don't realize how special you are, girl. I didn't want to be the one to ruin all of that for you.
Shante: You can't ruin anything for me that I don't allow you to. We could have helped eachother. I really believe that.
LeMarvin: Well, what do we do now?
Shante: Take a risk.
