~Thug Like Him~

I noticed Lemarvin eyeing me the entire night. In a way I was somewhat drawn to him. I don't know what it was. Maybe it was his thuggish appearance and gentleman like candor. Or was it just because he was the finest guy I had ever seen.

Deja: Girl, we need to get up and dance!
Shante: I can't dance in these heels. I might break my ankle.
Deja: Kick those darn shoes off and get loose!

I reached down, unbuckled my shoes and took them off. Deja dragged me to the dance area. The party was getting more backed by the hour. The dj played some really good music. I stood there at first, looking at Deja like she was crazy, then I got into the music. Before I knew it, there was a bunch of people dancing with us. I was starting to have fun now. After severl fast songs, the dj slowed it down. Cheech came over and asked Deja to slow dance. She was grinning so huge as he grabbed her hand. I had to admit, they looked cute together. I was on my way back to my seat when I felt someone gently grab my hand. I turned around.

Lemarvin: Can I have a dance with you?
Shante: I dunno
Lemarvin: Come on, please? Just one?
Shante: All right

I let him lead me back onto the dance area. He pulled me real close to him, slipped his left arm around my waist and held my right hand in his. He smelled so good. I closed my eyes. I could feel his heart beat against my chest.

Lemarvin: So....you don't have a boyfriend?
Shante: Why does everyone keep asking me that?
Lemarvin: I was just wondering. I didn't mean anything by it.
Shante: I'm really not looking for a boyfriend right now. Guys have asked me out but I'm just more focused on graduating from high school.
Lemarvin: No doubt. Sounds like you've got your priorities straight.
Shante: Yep.

We danced through two slow songs, then a fast one came on. We pulled away and looked at eachother.

Lemarvin: Thanks..
Shante: For what?
Lemarvin: Allowing me a dance.
Shante: You're welcome.

He started to walk away, turning around and smiling at me on his way back to where Jo Jo and the entourage was standing.

Deja: Uh huh, miss thing! I seen that!
Deja was standing beside me, still grinning.
Shante: Oh, no. Now what?
Deja: Man, the two of you look so good together. I am so serious.
Shante: I don't know about all that
Deja: Trust me. It was perfect. And you looked like you was enjoying it
Shante: Girl, please
Deja: Stop fronting! If you are digging the boy then so what! He is gorgeous. And he seems like he is a gentleman.
Shante: He seems cool, I guess.
Deja: You need to gon head and holler at him
Shante: Would you stop trying to hook me up with people? First Carlos, now him.
Deja: We done forgot about Carlos. Oh, Lord...
Shante: What?

Deja turned me around and guess who was approaching? Carlos.

Carlos: Hi, Shante. Wow, you look beautiful.
Shante: Hello. And thanks.
Carlos: I seen you dancing with that dude.
Shante: Yeah? So?
Carlos: I hope I can get a dance later
Shante: We'll see. Ask me later.

I walked back to my seat and sat down.

The party was winding down now. The dj announced that he was going to play one last slow song. I rolled my eyes. I looked around. I had to escape before Carlos found me and wanted that dance. I seen Lemarvin talking to some guy. I got up, grabbed my shoes and headed in his direction. But before I made it over there, Carlos caught me. Dang.

Carlos: So, can I have my dance or what?
I sighed.
Shante: Sure.

I put my arms around his neck as he slipped his arms around me. I turned me head to the side and looked around for Deja. I seen her sitting on Cheech's lap. They were laughing, and Cheech was rubbing her leg. I kept looking around and I spotted Lemarvin again. He seen me. He said something to the guy he was talking to and he started walking towards Carlos and I. The next thing I knew he was standing behind Carlos and tapped him on the shoulder.

Lemarvin: Mind if I cut in?

Carlos looked at me funny, then unwrapped his arms from around me and backed up. Lemarvin pulled me close to him and put his arms around me. I put my arms around his neck. We were face to face. He looked deep into my eyes, like he was searching for something.

Shante: Thanks.
Lemarvin: You looked like you wanted to be rescued.
Shante: Oh my. Could you tell?
He laughed.
Lemarvin: Unfortunately, yes.
Shante: He is so annoying.
Lemarvin: Always hitting on you?
Shante: Yes. You would think he would get the hint.
Lemarvin: I think he has it now.
Shante: Well, I hope so. I was going to give him a chance but he blew it.
Lemarvin: I feel you.
Shante: I know what I want to ask you.
Lemarvin: Ask me anything.
Shante: Do you go to school?
Lemarvin: Nope.
Shante: You didn't drop out did, you?
He chuckled.
Lemarvin: No. I am out of school.
Shante: Oh....then how old are you then?
Lemarvin: I'm 20.
Shante: Oh, okay. How did you get in the party?
Lemarvin: I know Cheech. He's a friend of mine.
Shante: I see.

We danced until the song was over, then he let go of me. He stood there for a moment.

Lemarvin: Hope to see you again.
Shante: You might.

He leaned down and kissed me on the cheek.

Lemarvin: Good night, pretty lady.

He walked over to where Jo Jo and the entourage was and they started to leave. Then Deja came up beside me.

Deja: Awwww...he gave you a kiss on the cheek! That was so cute!
Shante: Spying? I seen Cheech rubbing your leg.
Deja: Um hum. I was getting all hot and bothered. He is something else. He was trying to get me to spend the night.
Shante: I just bet he was.
Deja: Now you know I don't do it like that. I might flirt but that's as far as it goes.
Shante: Sure.
Deja: I seen Carlos looking all pissy.
Shante: Yeah. We were dancing and Lemarvin cut in.
Deja: For real! Hecky naw! I know Carlos was salt!
Shante: I don't care. I hope he leaves me alone.

Deja called Damian and he arrived shortly to pick us up. He dropped me off at home and I waved goodbye to Deja as they rode off. I went into the house. It was dark. I sent up the stairs to my room and turned on the light. I kicked off my shoes, took off my dress and laid down on my comforter. I guess I fell asleep because I awoke the next morning curled up on my bed, still in my underclothes. I jumped up and went into the bathroom and turned on the shower. After the water got warm, I hopped in. I got out and put on some clean clothes. I felt like being comfortable today, so I put on a pair of jeans, a tee shirt and a pair of tennis shoes. I decided to go by and check on Mrs. West. I ran downstairs to the kitchen, where I found my mother making breakfast.

Mom: Good morning
Shante: Morning.
Mom: Hungry?
Shante: Not really. I'll just grab an orange. I am going to go check on Mrs. West. I'll be back later
Mom: Okay. Your father wants to put some meat on the grill later.
Shante: Umm....alright. That sounds good.

I grabbed an orange and headed out the door to the bus stop. On the ride over to Mrs. West's, I kept thinking about Lemarvin. He was so mysterious and intriguing. It was just something about him that I liked. I smiled to myself.

I got off at my stop and started to walk up the long pathway to the apartment building. On the way, I passed three rough looking dudes. The turned around and looked at me. I kept walking, acting as if I didn't see them.

Voice: Hey, shorty?

I kept walking.

Voice: Ey, girl! What your name is?

I kept walking right on up the stairs. Then they started following me. I picked up my pace all the way up the stairs and down the hallway to Mrs. West's apartment. The men followed. I dug in my pocket for my key to the door. It wasn't there. I searched my back pockets. I felt it, so I stuck my finger down to retrieve it. The men were at the top of the stairs, still trying to get my attention. They were making their way to where I was. Then...

Lemarvin: Do you need something?

I turned my head and seen Lemarvin coming up behind the men that were approaching me. The men turned around.

Man: Naw...just trying to holler at shorty
Lemarvin: Leave the lady alone. She's a friend of mine.
Man: My bad.....

The men turned around and headed toward the stairs, Lemarvin watching them closely until they were out of sight. He turned and walked towards me.

Lemarvin: Are you okay?
Shante: Yeah...thanks.
Lemarvin: You have to be careful. This isn't a nice place for a young lady to be by herself.
Shante: I come here all the time
Lemarvin: I was just saying..be careful.
Shante: You're right. Thanks, again. But where on earth did you come from?
Lemarvin: I was nearby and I seen them following you.
Shante: I didn't see you anywhere.
Lemarvin: Why? Was you looking?
Shante: No...I just did not see you.
Lemarvin: I seen you.
Shante: Apparently.

We stopped talking for a moment.

Lemarvin: Did you have a good time last night?
Shante: Yeah. Actually I did.
Lemarvin: That boy looked pretty upset.
Shante: Carlos? Oh, well. He'll get over it.
Lemarvin: I guess so.

We got quiet again. He looked so cute. His big brown eyes searching mine. It gave me butterflies.

Shante: Well, I have to check on the lady that lives here.
Lemarvin: Alright. I'll wait until you get inside.
Shante: Are you going to be nearby? I mean...when I get ready to leave from here...
Lemarvin: I won't let anything happen to you. Trust me.
